Menson RAGE opened in Nishi-Ogikubo in February 2015 as a ramen shop built around two things: shamo (a Japanese game fowl breed) and soy sauce. Its official site states that the "Shamo Soba" served at the Nishi-Ogikubo main shop was selected as a Michelin Bib Gourmand for eight consecutive years. The brand now runs four shops — Azabudai Hills, Nakano and Hanakoganei in addition to this one — but that Shamo Soba is served here, at the Matsuan main shop. It seats 13 (nine at the counter, four at tables), takes cash only, and does not accept reservations.

The shop and its record

According to the official site, the kitchen narrows its focus to shamo and soy sauce. The Michelin Guide Tokyo listed it as a Bib Gourmand — the category awarded on value for money, capped in the Tokyo edition at ¥6,000 including service charge — for eight straight years, from the 2016 edition through the 2023 edition (Yahoo! News Expert, by ramen writer Ide Taicho; WWDJAPAN). The first listing came in the 2016 edition, just six months after the shop opened (WWDJAPAN).

It has also been picked for Tabelog's "Ramen TOKYO Hyakumeiten" (the site's annual list of 100 notable ramen shops in Tokyo) for six consecutive editions from 2017 through 2022, and again in 2024 and 2025; it was not listed in the 2023 edition. Each year's list was checked on Tabelog's official award announcement pages. Suginami City's official information site, Suginami Gaku Club, gives the opening date as 6 February 2015.

What to order

The main shop's signature is Shamo Soba. The official site describes the Azabudai Hills branch's "Neo Shamo Soba" as the main shop's Shamo Soba "reworked so you can enjoy the shamo even more," topped with shamo chashu and sold only at that branch — so the two bowls are presented as different dishes. If the original is what you came for, Matsuan is where to go.

Note that the only prices the official site publishes are for the Azabudai Hills menu; the Nishi-Ogikubo line-up and its prices are not posted online (as of July 2026). Niboshi soba (dried-sardine broth) and mazesoba (a brothless bowl you mix yourself) appear in the brand-wide description, but the site does not confirm whether the main shop serves them, so check the listings in the shop before ordering. The vegan menu is explicitly marked "served at the Azabudai Hills shop," and there is no official confirmation it is available here.

Planning your visit

The shop runs two services a day: 11:00–15:00 (last order 14:50) and 18:00–21:00 (last order 20:50). The official site lists the same hours Monday through Sunday including public holidays, and on the days before and after them (as of July 2026).

Payment is cash only. The official site states that credit cards, electronic money and QR-code payments are all not accepted, and that reservations are not taken. There is no car park; the site directs drivers to paid parking nearby.

With 13 seats, this is a small room. The official site says unscheduled closures and one-person-operation days are announced on its X account (@menson_rage), so it is worth a look before making a long trip.
